Imagining a transparent tube floating on the water surface

Hamamirai Walk is a pedestrian deck that acts as a new entrance to the “Minato Mirai 21″ area from Yokohama Station. From the Yokohama station side, it connects to the Nissan Global Headquarters building and the waterfront promenade (a promenade along the river) across the Katabira River.

Nippon Engineering Consultants acquired the design work by winning the design competition. From the beginning, we imagined a transparent tube floating on the water surface reflecting the sky and water, receiving the refreshing wind and including an ingenious form with a streamlined cross section to protect pedestrians from the wind and rain. To realize that, the main features of the bridge that were chosen are the curved glass adopted for the shelter (roof) and the cross-sectional shape of the box girders that give the girder structure a continuous tubular shape.

The structural form is a two-span continuous steel plate deck box girder rigid frame structure with a bridge length of about 101.5 m and effective width of 10.4 m. We reviewed the design conditions during the basic design and changed the abutment in the river from the initial single span to two spans. As a result, it was possible to reduce the height of the girders, giving a slender silhouette by adopting a spindle-shaped cross section for the abutments, and a reduction in steel weight was also achieved.

In addition, we also proposed and delivered appropriate cost reductions while ensuring high design quality, such as by utilizing our patented composite PC well construction method on the P1 abutments. We also took innovative steps even for detailed parts such as the structural details and lighting fixtures, and finished the design according to the concept of the “Minato Mirai 21″area.
