A project that we participated in, “Kawasaki Muza Deck”, won the 2010 JSCE Civil Engineering Design Prize.
The JSCE Civil Engineering Design Prize is awarded to a select number of people and organizations that have contributed to projects involving public spaces and structures, particularly those that realize the creation of landscapes or help to preserve them. This is the tenth time for the JSCE to award this prize. Three grand prize winners, as well as four prize winners, three encouragement prize winners, and one special prize winner, were selected from a pool of 29 entries.
This project was the seventh winner that our company has had a part in. Others include “Kishamichi Promenade” and “The Shiga Route: Toward Ecological Coexistence” in 2001 (both grand prize winners), “Fureai Bridge” in 2002 (prize winner), “Minami-Honmoku Bridge” in 2003 (prize winner), “Total Design of Tomata Dam Area” in 2007 (grand prize winner, and “Shintoyo Bridge” in 2009 (grand prize winner).
The Kawasaki Muza Deck is a pedestrian bridge that connects JR Kawasaki Station and the redeveloped Muza Kawasaki building. It was officially opened after construction was completed on it in December 2003.
Some of the unique features of the design included preserving the group of large Japanese zelkova trees in the station square, and incorporating them into the view of pedestrians using the deck. For this reason, we designed an all-over shelter that aims to both ensure user-friendliness on rainy days and provide shade on sunny days, utilizing a cantilever-style that opens up in the direction of the trees. The gentle arc-shaped lines act as a bus shelter for the above-ground section of the station square, as well as give off a highly spacious feeling to those underneath them. Moreover, the deck route was polished off with prominent, detailed designs throughout, such as the pavement patterns and the lighting, which is all built into the structure itself.
