Recipient of the Japan Steel Bridge Engineering Association 2011 Bridge Engineer Medal

At the June 15th, 2011 meeting of the Japan Steel Bridge Engineering Association (Chairman: Professor Yozo Fujino, Tokyo University), Nippon Engineering Consultants employee Masahiko Harada was awarded the 2011 Bridge Engineer Medal. Established in 2007, the Bridge Engineer Medal is intended to publicly recognize engineers who make a clear contribution to the advancement and spread of steel bridges, and is awarded to consultants, fabricators and members of administration alike. This medal was awarded to Masahiko Harada in recognition of his contributions to planning and design, as well as O&M, as follows:

Bridge Planning and Design

  • Work on arch bridge development, such as center-road style Nielsen-Lohse Bridges or converse-curve Lohse Bridges.
  • Work on bridges connecting outlying islands, which are subject to strong winds and salt damage.
  • Planning on the Bayshore Route Bridge while dispatched to the Hanshin Expressway Public Corporation.
  • Winner of award from the Hokuriku Regional Development Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in public recognition of excellence in business or engineering, for work on earthquake reinforcement and maintenance work on existing bridges.

Research

  • Presentation of papers on complex structures, existing bridge maintenance and reinforcement techniques, and vibration characteristics.
  • Received Doctoral Degree for research work on results and examination methods of reinforcement work on existing bridges.
  • Received Paper Award (civil engineering category) for the paper “A study on the vibration characteristics change of the steel truss bridge by the real damage of diagonal member” at the 54th Annual Structural Engineering Symposium.
