Vehicle weight monitoring

In order to maintain a good management level of bridges, we monitor the active load of vehicles, which is the load factor of bridges to accurately understand the actual condition. To understand the actual running load, we use a system called “BWIM (Bridge Weigh In Motion)” which sets the bridge as a “measurement scale” and estimates the load.

System features

  • Optical fiber sensors (OSMOS) that offer excellent long-term stability and are less susceptible to noise and the like are used.
  • Adoption of impact area method that estimates gross weight based on the area ratio of impact lines due to the response of short members such as extension vertical girders. The impact area method offers simple measurement, calibration and analysis.
  • The weight estimation of vehicles is analyzed in real time, and only the analysis results are stored in the on-site PC.
  • Images of the vehicles are monitored with network cameras, and if the weight exceeding a set threshold value is detected, an e-mail is sent with the image of the target vehicle as an attachment.
  • Analysis results are periodically sent to the data center and an ASP service that can be viewed from a browser is provided.

This system answers the following customer needs

  • We want to understand the actual traffic situation when setting the management level according to the actual vehicle load.
  • We want to understand the actual traffic situation when preparing a control plan for overload vehicles.
